Spanish proverbs and their translations
“No dejes para mañana lo que puedas hacer hoy,” says a Spanish proverb. It will be translated into Romanian as follows: Never put off for tomorrow, what you can do today. Wonderful. But what do you do if the translation is not a literal one and only the meaning has to be rendered? There are cases where a single word translated “incorrectly” changes the entire meaning of the sentence or phrase. We believe that a true professional must know the subtleties of the language from which he is translating in order to produce a correct and therefore valuable translation.
That is why we will never translate “No hay que ahogarse en un vaso de agua” as: “You must not drown in a glass of water”…when the meaning intended was “Don’t make a big deal out of this”. What an “unfortunate” translation that would have been, wouldn’t it?
